You may be surprised to find yourself clapping and cheering, along with a full house at the Rock Voices’ Winter Concert, featuring favorites from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s up to the present. You may even be able to pick out several 5CLIR members among the large community of choristers singing their hearts out under the inspired direction of RV’s founder, Tony Lechner.

GAZETTE NEWSPAPER TOUR

Have you ever wondered how a modern newspaper comes to be? This tour of the Gazette is your chance to see the creation of a newspaper from the raw ideas of the reporters to the final printed copy. The tour will start at the conference room with a short history of the Gazette (hint: founded in 1786), followed by a walk through the plant, with opportunities to stop and chat with some staff along the way. We will end up back at the conference room for any last questions and/or comments.

A DAY AT THE SPRINGFIELD MUSEUMS

We’ll be going by bus for convenience and sense of safety for those who have hesitated to go themselves to the cultural center of Springfield: the Quadrangle. Here we will have a guided overview of the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts’ collection of American and European paintings, prints, and sculpture; and visit the newly opened Amazing World of (Springfield native) Dr. Seuss Museum. Lunch will be available as you will at the Quadrangle Café, after which you will be on your own to visit other Quadrangle gems: the Science Museum’s Natural History, African and Dinosaur Halls; the George Walter Vincent Smith Museum’s one-of-a-kind collection of Chinese, Japanese and Middle Eastern Arts; and/or the Wood Museum of Springfield History, tracing the story of the City’s vital role in our national history. By 3:00 you’ll be looking forward to a rest on the bus trip home.

The Flynt Center of Early New England Life is a 27,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility featuring the museum’s most sensitive and highly valued collections: textiles, furniture, and decorative arts, as well as special exhibits, such as the current one of engraved powder horns from the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. We will be oriented by a member of the Flynt Center staff and on our own for lunch at any of the several area restaurants. Parking is available on site.

Come hear our area legislators give a summary of 2017 accomplishments and their outlook for the coming year. Senator Stan Rosenberg (President of the Massachusetts General Court) and State Representatives Peter Kocot (First Hampshire District), John Scibak (Second Hampshire District) and Stephen Kulik (First Franklin District) will brief us on critical matters affecting the State’s future. This is your chance to hear directly from those shaping public policies, and to be a part of a Question and Answer session following the presentations. This free event has been a long-time favorite of LIR members.
